When Jo and I moved to Texas in 1998 Uncle John made sure we settled quickly into life in Dallas. He was such a caring and positive person and we loved having him nearby and as a regular visitor. After we returned to live in the UK on his next trip ‘home’ we had the pleasure of helping him fulfil a long held ambition to visit Scotland. We all took a trip to Edinburgh, spent an evening at an ‘open mic’ session for local singers and secured a recording of one of Scotland’s best known folk acts, The Corries, to provide additional material for the Irish Rogues’!
During the past three years I was able to visit Uncle John regularly when in Dallas on business trips. He always gave such a warm welcome and strong invitation to return – ‘you know, the door is always open my lad…’ – I have many happy memories of those times together. Uncle John was more than family – he was also a great friend. Though sadly missed, he’ll never be forgotten.

We enjoyed many of your visits here in Ireland. I was lucky enough to celebrate your 90th birthday with you in Texas, which was a very special and memorable occasion. Thanks to the many tapes you sent us throughout the years, we are still lucky enough to enjoy your company. Although it is hard to say goodbye, it is a comfort to imagine your reunion with mum. Met John in 1984 after coming back to Texas from the Dakotas. We became good friends, and John encouraged and guided me to establish what is now known as the KelticDead Music Broadside columns which have run and continue to run in the Southwest Celtic Music Association’s newsletter “CEILI.” He was my inspiration and my mentor in the song catching initiative and for keeping true to the magic that is Celtic music. It was an honor to share the music and fun together. I’ll miss you John.

As John Henry’s only living sibling I feel sad not to be able to be part of his funeral service and burial today – but I will certainly be with you all in spirit. John Henry was a wonderful, generous and thoughtful brother and son. From when he left Shinrone in 1948, he kept in touch regularly with all the family and made several return visits to Ireland over the years which we always thoroughly enjoyed. I was able to speak with him for the last time in late June this year on a Skype call arranged by my son Ivor who was visiting him in Dallas. We laughed a lot on that call and I remember thinking how well he looked and sounded – so it was a shock when the news came through last weekend; but I take great comfort that God gave him a peaceful passing.
I will miss our talks about old times; I will miss his sense of fun and laughter. He was truly a loving brother and a great friend and I look forward to that time when we will meet again in God’s presence.
Kathy, David and families – you are in all our thoughts and prayers at this time.

In late 2000 a hail storm came though my neighborhood in Garland TX. A roofing sales man came calling one afternoon soon after and told me that I sounded just like that guy in the house with the green trim. I bought a six pack and headed over the next evening and knocked on his door. In my 15 years in TX, it was undoubtedly the best move I ever made. John and I became friends instantly. I wore a path to his door and whole in his couch watching dancing with the stars. I loved his stories from home, his music, and his company. John was the most selfless person I’ve met. Generous and forgiving almost to a fault. He had such a wonderful outlook on life. An inspiration, to be late in his 80’s, being his own roadie, warping up mike cords, lifting heavy speakers and driving home at 2 am from Trinity Hall. He was as straight as an arrow. Honest, dependable, trustworthy and steadfast. God Bless you John.

We considered John to be a dear friend, and it was always a treat to get to see him during and after his days with the Irish Rogues. After his accordions were stolen many years ago, we enjoyed the adventure of meeting up with nephew John on one of our trips to England to collect the accordion he had found there that met the specifications and to be able to to bring it back to him. He will truly be missed.
