Reverend John L. Hunt's Obituary
Reverend John L. Hunt, 89, was born July 27, 1934, in Linden, Texas and passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, in Garland, Texas.
Dedicated to providing for his family, John worked tirelessly with the city of Garland for more than twenty-five years before retiring. While working full-time, John also painted houses in the evenings to supplement income for a large family. After long days and nights of work, he spent hours in the office diligently studying in preparation for classes at Southern Bible Training School or teaching and preaching the Word at church or in home groups.
John was licensed to preach on April 5, 1970, at Shiloh Baptist Church. He received his diploma from Southern Bible Training School on May 7, 1972. John served continuously in leadership and deacon roles at Shiloh Baptist Church, Bibleway Bible Church, and Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF). On February 6, 1994, John was ordained as
a Deacon at OCBF. Later that year, he was recognized with a Leadership Award for service as a Care Cell Leader. As a team, The Hunt’s hosted Bible study home groups and OCBF Care Cells where he taught and fellowshipped with other believers who remain lifelong friends. In 2000, John received the OCBF ‘Servant’s Heart Award’ for Reach & Rescue. For several years, John also pastored a church in South Dallas until adverse health issues prevailed.
John was preceded in death by wife, Doris; son, John Ray Hunt; parents, Felton and Rosie Lee Hunt; sisters, Alice Cheathum and Bobbie Jean Sanders; and brothers, Evans Hunt, Jimmy Hunt, Ezell Hunt, Robert Hunt, and Isaiah Hunt.

A few days before entering glory, John told an assisted living team member that he wanted to go home. She responded, ‘You are home, Mr. John.’ Pointing heavenward, he said, ‘No, this is not my home. My home is up there.’ John is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And finally resting comfortably in the arms of a Loving Father.
Special thanks to the Abba Care Assisted Living team and residents, Ron and Toni Montgomery, Margaret Hall, Larry Hurd, Thomas Erving, Vernon Hunt, and Pastor Martin Hawkins.
