Jack's words of wisdom helped shape my life…. As a 22-year-old, starry-eyed, IBM sales rep, I held my elders at IBM in very high regard. Jack was always willing to offer a supportive comment and "experienced" perspective, and quickly became one of my go-to advisors. I didn't get to work with Jack long, however, there are 2 pieces of advice he gave me in the short time that helped shape my career and my life. I'll leave out the boring IBM advice, and go straight to the reason Jack will live on in my mind forever. One Monday morning I came into the office on cloud 9….. that weekend my boyfriend had asked me to marry him. I fell into conversation about it with Jack and he was very happy for me. But instead of the normal smiles and congrats, I got a very different reaction from Jack. He moved into father mode? coach? mentor? advisor? I'm not real sure, but he became very serious and said to me "Marriage is work. It's hard work. Work that you do every day just like your job. If you're not willing to work on it every single day, you should not get married." It was not just his words, it was his delivery and eye contact. He cared,,,, about "me", about the institution of marriage and the reality of what takes to make it work. His words play back in my head on a regular basis. I've now been married for 28 years, and honestly, I have Jack to thank! Carolyn – you were both so blessed to have one another. It is no surprise at all that you and Jack had 62 years together! May God watch over you now and provide the comfort you need. Kim Lockwood IBM new hire in 1987 (one last comment, 2017 is my 30th year with IBM,,,, Jack's career advice was very good as well!!)
So many happy memories of our times together. Our thoughts are with the family and especially dear Carolyn. Paul & Shari
