Jon A. Pirtle's Obituary
Dr. Jon A. Pirtle of Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on February 12th, 2009 in Dallas at the age of 85. As an ordained Baptist minister since 1942, he pastored congregations, led evangelistic campaigns throughout the country, and sought to serve the spiritual needs of others through Christian ministries for more than 65 years. Early pastorates included First Baptist Churches of Jonesboro and Fitzgerald, Georgia; followed by the First Baptist Church of Chattahoochee, Atlanta; North Atlanta Baptist; and Peachtree Baptist Church of Atlanta. A resident of Dallas since 1975, Dr. Pirtle provided Christian Stewardship ministry for churches of differing denominations throughout the United States and Canada for almost 20 years. A faithful member and lay leader of the First Baptist Church of Dallas for the past 34 years, he has been active in Sunday School and numerous outreach and mission ministries serving the Dallas community and beyond. He received his education for the ministry at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY and received an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the Atlanta Law School in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Pirtle, brother, Herbert Strickland and his wife Ruth, Atlanta,GA and his children, Jon A. Pirtle III, Blowing Rock, NC, Paula Pirtle Reagan, Atlanta, GA, Lee Johnson, King, NC, Stephanie Morey, McKinney, TX, and Marie Reed, Sachse, TX, and their spouses. His family legacy also includes 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Family members will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Friday, February 13, 2009 at Restland Funeral Home. The funeral service honoring his life will be held 12:30 PM, Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Dallas.
