Mr. Powers was the first teacher to truly connect with and inspire my son Dylan.
Having been fortunate enough to have had several such teachers in my own life, I've always wanted such teachers for my own children. I mean those really special teachers you remember the rest of your life.
So when Mr. Powers came along, and we saw in Dylan a passion become a talent in a way we'd never seen before, my heart was happy. Dylan had finally found one of those life-changing teachers.
So to hear of Mr. Powers' passing was heart-breaking. This would have been their third year together.
Dylan picked up the cello for the first time in 6th grade, ending that year with Mr. Powers naming him sixth grade "Student of the Year."
Prior to 6th grade Dylan had barely a passing interest in music, but now he knows more about classical music than I do. I credit Mr. Powers for creating this passion in my son.
I am so grateful for Mr. Powers and the impact he had on Dylan's life. He will always have a special place in our hearts for him.
I offer my hear-felt condolences to his mom, Ms. Powers, who was so supportive of her son - and his students - and to the rest of the family. Please know that his impact, which was broad and profound, will live on for many years to come.
