Marjorie M. (Wingate) Spillner's Obituary
Marjorie M. Wingate Spillner, age 92, passed away peacefully in Phoenix, AZ, on June 30, 2020 at Paradise Living Center, with her loving daughters at her side. Marjorie was born in 1928 in Yoakum, Texas, and spent most of her childhood in Houston, Texas. She attended Southern Methodist University and the University of Denver, and after college began a lifelong love of travel with a career at Braniff International Airlines in Dallas, Texas. It was at Braniff that she met the love of her life, Corky (Roy) Spillner, and they married Jan. 17, 1953, during an icy winter storm in Dallas. They were married just shy of 62 years at the time of Corky’s passing on January 14, 2015. Together they raised two daughters, Dawn and Cassie.
Marjorie truly loved people and loved to travel! Thanks to Marjorie’s beloved Braniff, the Spillners traveled the world, including frequent trips to Hawaii - the family’s favorite destination. She especially loved Europe – Austria and Germany in particular, and she and Corky loved taking Viking River Cruises through Europe in the later years. After Braniff, Marjorie continued working in travel, sharing her love for travel as an agent at Dillard’s Travel. During this new career chapter, she earned top recognition for sales of Princess Cruises, which allowed Marjorie and Corky to enjoy cruises to Alaska, Australia, the Mediterranean and the Holy Land. Marjorie volunteered as a docent at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Dallas Love Field for many years.
Marjorie loved decorating her home, especially for holidays, loved Aerobic Dancing, through which she made many wonderful friends through the years, and loved visiting and traveling with her best friend and neighbor, Leona Johnson. She loved her precious Collies and Shelties: Trixie, Tammy, Pixie, Oliver, Jerry, and Denali. She and Corky loved dancing to Big Band music. In 2008 she danced to their favorite “Moonlight Serenade” in the Ms. Senior Texas America pageant, in a beautiful pink gown as family and friends proudly watched. She loved her family and loved to tell wonderful stories of her early days of traveling, ice skating, and friends made along the way.
Marjorie’s motto was “live life to the fullest”, and that she did!
Marjorie is survived by her daughters, Dawn D. Spillner, Cassandra (Cassie) Spillner, daughter-in-law, Cindy Weatherly, sister Shirley W. Miller, nieces Ella Marie Miller, Diane Wingate Wardlaw, and Kay Lester Butler. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy (Corky) Spillner, parents William C. Wingate and Ella Prause Wingate, sister Vivian Lester, and brother William C. (Bubba) Wingate, Jr.
Marjorie will be laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, next to her beloved Corky.
Special thanks to caregivers Vicky Schempp, Chris Hoyt, Wendy Bailey, Lisa Lowry, and Lana Taylor for the love and compassion shown to Marjorie during her time in Arizona.
