Mary Ann Aasterud's Obituary
Mary Ann Hogseth Aasterud
Mary was born July 10, 1940, to Valeria and Walter Hogseth. She was the second of 5 children and the only daughter. She grew up in Chippewa Falls, WI (God’s Country) where she made lifelong friends, learned to waterski, ice skate, snow ski, and scoop ice cream Although her brothers were allowed to play baseball outside while she had to clean the house, she was able to include her brothers in her work by dumping the dirty cleaning on third base, directly below the second story bathroom window. Mary always had an independent and feisty spirit.
Mary attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, earning a Masters in Speech Therapy. She worked in schools in Wisconsin and in Minnesota where she met Jon Aasterud at a party in 1965. They married in 1968 and soon after moved to Richardson, TX. Their trial child, Erik, was born in 1969. Two years later, their perfect child, Valerie was born. Mary was a stay-at-home mom until the fateful day she decided to wallpaper her kitchen. That one DIY project turned into her business, where word-of mouth demand allowed her to work where and when she wanted. She was active in many organizations and served in leadership roles in garden clubs, bridge groups, St. Paul’s parish, Richardson Symphony Guild, West Point Mothers Club, the Dallas area Texas A&M Mothers Club and the Norwegian Society of Texas. In 2013 she moved to College Station to be near her daughter and family. Mary enjoyed a lifetime of travel, visiting all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, most of Europe, Israel, South America, the Galapagos, Tasmania and Australia. She enjoyed waterskiing through her 60’s and snow skiing through her 70’s, and seemed to have friends in every town. It was dementia that robbed her of her independence and her spirit. She died September 4, 2022.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Jon, her parents, her in-laws Carrie and Ole Aasterud, sisters-in-law Brita Aasterud and Donna Hogseth, and her dog Duchess.
She is survived by Erik and Karolina Aasterud of Aberdeen, Scotland; Valerie McLaughlin of Bryan, TX; grandchildren Martin Aasterud, Charlie and Piper McLaughlin; Phoebe Dog; her brothers John (Jane) Hogseth, Steve (Jeanne) Hogseth, Bob Hogseth, Mark (Marilyn Cohn) Hogseth; 5 nieces and their families, and four nephews and their families; friends who are like family, Jack and Judy Garlick and Marcus Leder; as well as extended family and countless friends in WI, MN, CA, TX, Germany, Norway, Denmark and elsewhere.
