Mary E. Floyd's Obituary
MARY SLOVER FLOYD of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully in Waco on May 31, 2017. Mary was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1925, in Tyler, Texas. Her mother, Pauline Slover, raised Mary and her sisters, Orell and Adell, and her brothers, Drummond and Charles, with love and integrity. Each earned education after high school through hard work in difficult economic times. She graduated from Lufkin High School and Stephen F. Austin State University, with a degree in education. Mary’s natural enthusiasm supported her gymnastics and cheerleading through high school and college. Mary met and married Moore Franklin Floyd after he returned from World War II and they moved to College Station, Texas, so he could complete his studies at Texas A&M. A few Aggies remember that married couples lived in Army barracks with no running water at that time. Later they settled with their three young children in East Dallas. Mary was a teacher for 35 years before retiring in 1990 from the Mesquite Independent School District. Over her career, she taught elementary grades, P.E., and served as a homebound teacher assisting students with health issues or injuries to continue in school. She was an energetic parent and community volunteer; serving as PTA President in her children’s Dallas schools and being elected as President of the Mesquite Teachers Association. Mary and Moore were early members at Casa View Methodist Church. Above all, Mary loved her family. She was involved with her children, nieces, and nephews, and later, her grandchildren. Her natural enthusiasm for life leads to exciting summer adventures such as visits to the “free” tours of Dr. Pepper, Mrs. Baird’s Bread and Kraft Foods. She remained active well into her eighties and could still swim and do “acrobatics” as a grandmother. Our “Mimi” was loved dearly by all. Mary is preceded in death by husband, Moore Floyd, by sisters Orell (Slover) Kinnaird and Adell (Slover) Poland, and by brothers, Drummond and Charles Slover. She is survived by her children: Judith Baggett and husband William, Pat Stricklin, and David Floyd and wife Bonnie. She will be missed by her beloved grandchildren: Stefanie Hawkins and husband Craig, Laura Minyard and husband Brian, Lacey Baggett, Natalie Ybarra and husband Anthony, Dan Floyd and wife Cristina, and Stacie Holler and husband Selby, She loved her great grandchildren: Molly Kate and Mary Minyard, Jackson and Luke McCollum, Camila, Christopher, and Daniela Floyd, and Bailie and Blake Johnson.
