Mary Mae Kanna Manuel's Obituary
Born April 5, 1917 in Polk County, Arkansas to Pete and Katherine Kanna, Mary was one of 10 children. She passed away at the age of 99 of natural causes on June 6, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. Mary is survived by daughters, Dorothy Woodward and husband, Dr. John R. Woodward, Shirley Manuel, Loretta Manuel; brother, Mitchel Kanna; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. She experienced many events during her lifetime such as: World War I, Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight, The Depression, World War II, Korean War, “jumbo-jet” age beginning, 1969 moon landing, and the electronics era. As a student with chores before and after school, Mary walked 3 miles to and from school with her sisters and brothers. As a teenager she helped her father cut timber into cross ties. When a young bride she moved to Goldthwaite, Texas where she reared her daughters. In the next period of her life, she lived in Phoenix, Arizona and then Las Vegas, Nevada before returning to Texas in 1978 to the Dallas area. Very special memories were created during many trips, particularly to England, Scotland, Italy, Australia, and Kentucky. A highlight of her first trip to London was seeing Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. Trips to Kentucky were always relaxing. Visiting the horse farms and Buffalo Trace Distillery resulted in some delightful friendships. Mary graced the lives of many with her sweetness, kindness, compassion and her fabulous cooking. Many will miss her delicious pies. This remarkable lady enjoyed being busy. She was always doing something, and worked up until a month ago. Her life was truly an inspiration: Hardships only made her more resilient and made the good times even better. Her life was an example goodness. When asked the secret of her longevity she always replied “hard work”, meaning “stay busy at something constructive”. Special thanks to Dr. Allen Shulkin and Dr. Ronald Kerr for their excellent care. Also thanks to caregivers Carolyn, Beverly and Helen. Graveside Service will take place at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 in Restland Memorial Park, Chapel Garden II Mausoleum. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to macular degeneration organizations such as www.brightfocus.org or American Lung Association at 55 West Wacker Dr., #1150, Chicago, IL. 60601.
