Max Edwin Winkler's Obituary
Max Edwin Winkler was born on March 14, 1925 in Skidmore, Texas to Frank & Ella Winkler. He passed away in Grapevine, Texas on August 19, 2017 at the age of 92. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank & Ella Winkler, wife and the mother of his children, Margaret Ann Broyles Winkler, sister Tressie Lawrence and brother, Jimmy Winkler. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jane Wagley Winkler, and children Mike Winkler (Janet), Doug Winkler (Melalee), Maribeth Stitt (Jim) Doug Wagley (Kathy), Debbie Dreyfus (Richard) and Delayne Pickle (Ron), brother Ellis Winkler (Lee) and sister-in-law Florine Winkler. 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Max served our country in the US Navy from 1944-1946. It was always fun to hear his stories particularly about working for 4 hours on and 4 hours off 24/7 during the war. He married Margaret Ann Broyles Winkler in Houston, Texas on September 21, 1952, they were blessed to be married for 34 years and had 3 children, Michael Edwin (1954), Melvin Douglas (1957) and Maribeth Ann (1959). Max worked for Ingram Equipment and Connelly Lott Nickels prior to joining Stewart & Stevenson in the early 1960’s. He spent the next 20 years in the diesel engine business before taking the opportunity to retire to purchase Universal Southwest with his son Mike. Together they ran the company for over 15 years. He never retired and was always working on something. After the death of his first wife Margaret, he met and married Jane Wagley and began a 30 year journey. That journey started with doubling the size of the family from 3 kids to 6, along with spouses, grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. Max & Jane lived life to the fullest, travelled, spent time with old friends and made many new ones never dreaming that they would be together for just over 30 years. Max worked hard to care for Jane as she experienced various health issues these past couple of years. To those that knew him well, he would not have had it any other way. What a gracious & loving man he was. Max, Dad, Granddaddy Max, we love and respect you; you will be missed. Well done my good and faithful servant!
