My heart goes out to Mike's sister, Debbie, and his friends and family. I will always remember Mike for his stories and music. Mike and I had great times in our youth playing Dixieland Music and doing Boy Scouts together. Mike would gather his music playing buddies in his den and he would get us to play Dixieland music together. I have just found out of Mike's passing. So sorry for your loss. I am Mike's cousin once or twice removed…through Arrington line. His grandmother, Lula, and my grandmother, Alice, were sisters. My wife and I have known Mike for many years. MIke's family lived just a few houses from my wife's family. Probably known him for more than 60 years. We were pleased to have a sweet conversation with him just two weeks before his death. He will be missed. Our deepest condolences to his sister and rest of the family. Mike will be greatly missed. He was in my local Dallas camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and faithfully attended and had many friends there. He was extremely knowledgeable about his ancestors and the history of the South. We used to have the "Mike Smith Minute" at our meetings where we asked him random trivia questions about the Civil War, and he rarely missed one. Our prayers go out to Mike's family and friends who are grieving his loss.

Michael was responsible for several 'firsts' in my life that were the beginning of a long friendship. He cared deeply for my boys & introduced them to guns, knives, hunting, fishing, & other 'fun boy stuff'. He gave me my first pistol & taught me how to use it & bought me diamond earrings & something from Neiman Marcus because 'every woman should have those'. He nicknamed one of my sons, Pookie, after Garfield's teddy bear, a name that's stayed with him for 33 years (as well as the teddy bear). All our family has 'Mike stories' & he will always be remembered fondly as a caring & giving friend who loved all of us. We'll always be sad that we never made it to hear him play because that was something else he really wanted to share with us. He will be missed but we will have good memories to console us. Our sympathy goes out to Debbie for the loss of her brother & for all those who have lost a friend. Rest in peace, my friend.
