Mildred Custer's Obituary
Mildred Custer, former long-time resident of Mesquite, passed away peacefully September 27, 2021 in Austin. She was born August 19, 1925 in Howe, TX. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, John H Custer; sister, Waldine Kent; and parents, Earl and Pearl Taylor. She is survived by brothers, Harold Taylor and Bob Taylor; daughter, Pamela Robertson, of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kathy Custer of Austin; grandchildren, Jennifer Steinocher and husband, Robert Steinocher; John Custer; and James Custer and wife Kyrsten Kelly; great-granddaughter, Sidney Steinocher; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
After high school graduation, Mildred moved to Dallas where she met the love of her life, John H Custer, during WWII on a blind date. They were married April 23rd 1944 before John was shipped overseas to Europe. John served in the army for two years before returning home after the war. Shortly after John’s return home, they moved to Cedar Rapids, IA where they lived until 1956 prior to moving back to Texas with their two children, Pam and Jeff. John and Mildred lived in Dallas until 1960 before moving to Mesquite where they were blessed with many happy years together. John passed away in 1979. Mildred continued to live in Mesquite while working as an Executive Assistant to the Director of the Housing at Southern Methodist University. She enjoyed many friends and co-workers during her working days at SMU, retiring at age 70. She was very active in her church, Pleasant Mound United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women’s Group. Mildred moved to Austin in 2018 to be closer to her children. She was a special blessing to her family and friends. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held Monday October 4, 2021, 10 am at Restland’s Wildwood Chapel in Dallas, TX.
