Dr. Myrtle E. Hightower's Obituary
Dr. Myrtle Hightower, was born in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, March 11th, on a farm, to loving
parents along with four brothers & sisters. She learned early to remain positive and to be kind
to others.
Dr. Hightower, graduated from high school at the tender age of 15 and enrolled in Langston
University, where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She would
later graduate with a degree in English.
Dr. Hightower went on to earn a Master of Teaching degree from Northeastern State University
and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Her credentials include a teacher, as well as library
certification.
Dr. Hightower held many positions in education in Oklahoma including Dean of Women at her
Alma Mater Langston University. Additionally, over the course of 30 years, Dr. Hightower served
McKinney and Plano Independent School District. In 1997, she retired from education.
She served on many communities and boards throughout the state and has been honored with
numerous awards. To name a few, she was selected as one of Plano's 100 Heros, a Collin
College Living Legend and a recipient of the Texas Hero for Children Award in Austin, Texas.
In 2010, the PISD School Board officially renamed the John and Myrtle Hightower Elementary
School in recognition of her commitment to education. Dr. Hightower served as a committee
member for the Plano Library Foundation, the Plano Housing Board, and the Plano Board of
Adjustment, among many others.
In 2020, during a powerful tribute, Dr. Hightower received Plano’s Key to the City by former
Mayor Harry LaRosiliere. To highlight her numerous diversity and Community Service Awards,
Plano ISD extended a 2023 Lifetime Diversity Award for her invaluable contributions to
education, children and communities.
Dr. Hightower is survived by her two children, Bessie Coffer & Johnnie Burnside; (9) grandchildren, (15)
great-grandchildren and host of family and friends.
