Neva Joyce Young's Obituary
Neva Joyce Litke Young arrived in her heavenly home on January 4, 2021. A New Year’s baby, Neva was born on January 1,1933 in Fairview, Oklahoma. She grew up on a farm in Mead, Oklahoma with her parents, John and Blanche Litke, and eight brothers and sisters. At Mead High School she was dubbed the “Southpaw Scoring Ace” for her awesome left-handed basketball skills. She was happily married to her high school sweetheart, Harold Gene Young, for 32 years before he preceded her in death in 1985.
Neva spent 25 years of her career at Southern Methodist University Basketball Department as staff secretary where she touched the lives of many coaches and student athletes. When the athletes could not return home for the Thanksgiving holidays because of basketball practices, Neva opened her home to them and treated them to a famous “Nana meal”. She was a servant to all and cooking was her love language. You were indeed fortunate if you were lucky enough to partake in a meal prepared by Nana.
Neva loved her Savior Jesus Christ and her church family at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in Dallas. Her church friends were near and dear to her heart and she enjoyed playing a mean game of Hand and Foot or Canasta with many of those dear friends.
Neva loved her family fiercely and will be forever treasured by her children, Kim Young Johnson and husband, Steve, and Greg Young and wife, Valerie. She was a wonderful Nana to her grandchildren Matthew Johnson and wife, Rachel; Michael Johnson; Lauren Johnson Frazer and husband, Braden; Halei Young, and great-grandchild Leah Johnson.
Neva wanted to be remembered for her good heart and she certainly accomplished that. “Well done good and faithful servant.”
A family graveside memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 28th, 2021 at 3pm at Restland Memorial Park.
