Nilima Nag's Obituary
We say goodbye to one of the kindest and strongest women in the world. Nilima Nag, age 87, passed on Friday, February 19, 2021 at 10:57 AM CST at Dallas Medical Center, Farmers Branch, Texas.
To see her, you would never know she was a survivor of the British occupation of India and what became East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), or that she was the last surviving member of her family of origin, living past her parents, or even that she was married for over 50 years to her beloved husband, Asish Chandra Nag (deceased). What you would know is that Nilima loved her family and community. Always a teacher at heart, she conveyed family and cultural traditions to her sons which they carry forward.
She left East Pakistan after graduating high school, moved to Kolkata in India and pursued degrees in Chemistry and Botany studies. She later joined her husband Asish in Canada who was pursuing his graduate degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Nilima eventually arrived with her family to Rochester, Michigan where she flourished in the Indian community. She was an authority on Indian rites and ceremonies, especially in the matter of cultural festivals of Durga (Heavenly Mother) and Saraswathi (Goddess of Knowledge) Pujas (Indian religious festivities). She also excelled in cooking and hosting friends and family – nobody turned down an invitation to one of her parties, which always had amazing food, conversation, and most importantly, her love and caring for her guests.
Retirement brought Nilima to Richardson, Texas to spend time with her 3 grandsons and allowed her to continue her pursuits including gardening as well as being an avid reader of cultural traditions and antiquities. She leaves her 2 sons, Debasish (Ron/Rana) and Koushik (Rup), now aged 52 and 47; and their families in Richardson – Grandsons, Dhilan, aged 16, and twins Kamran and Aren, aged 13 are sons of Ron & Malini – and in Goodyear, Arizona (near Phoenix) where Granddaughters Kendall, aged 9, and Lauren, aged 5; and the baby of the family Camden, aged 3 live with their parents, Rup & Jamie.
Nilima was very proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments. Nilima encourages all of us help others attain knowledge, such as by donating to the Ramakrishna Mission. We ask that you please make donations to the Scholarships for the poor and meritorious fund in the name of Nilima Nag, to carry on her legacy of spreading knowledge and culture.
