I did not know Richard. I graduated in 1971, but I want to send my thoughts and prayers to his entire family. It sounds like he was a good dad, grandfather and person. God Bless you all.
I only met Ric a few times but I know he was a great musician and made Leslie happy. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of great loss.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. He was a great musician and a friend. He will be greatly missed. Sonya Johnson
The songs will never be the same without your voice in Harmony. I will miss you always my dearest friend.
I remember watching you learn to play the fiddle and guitar from your Dad, at Grandma's and Grandpa's house. We will definitely miss you but will see you again someday. We know you are more alive today, with Jesus, than you have ever been in your life. Some of Your Texarkana Cousins: Marilyn Shipp Posey, Morgan & Taylor Bush, David and Nita Shipp, Robbie Ship
I'm John Hinckley. Ricky and I were in the same Boy Scout troop and Bill, his father was very active in the troop too. They both played the guitar and sang funny songs, told hilarious jokes and made us laugh all night long. The 1st thing that came to mind was Ricky's dad taking us on a survival camp out where all we carried with us was Boy Scout knives. We picked a sot near the lake ( I forget which one ). We spread out look for firewood and something to eat. I found a tree that had fallen over and had an abundance of firewood so it started picking up wood and then suddenly there was a rustling sound and some of the branches started moving. My first thought was SNAKE!!!! and I dropped the wood and ran away as fast as I could. I looked back from a safe distance and looking a little more calmly, I saw that under the branches of the dead tree was something that looked kind of big and oblong in shape .WHEW!!! IT WASN'T A SNAKE. so i hollered to the others to come over and we got closer and identified the creature as an armadillo! We talked about it for a few minutes and decided that armadillo was most definitely we prayed edible. So we used shouts and sticks to scare the dinner out of his hiding place and I killed him with a stick. It turns out armadillo was great and of course it tasted like chicken!;-) We didn't think the armadillo would be enough for the whole unit so we spread out again and this time Ricky scared up a nice size rabbit. Now chasing the slow, ungainly armadillo down was pretty easy although they scurry faster than you'd think they could. But can you imagine chasing a rabbit down? Impossible…. what to do? Ricky told us to start finding rocks. Ricky was the pitcher in our church baseball league so we all designated him as the rock hurler. We would sneak toward the rabbit and Ricky would start tossing. The rabbit would run away a little bit so we 'd have to sneak up again and Ricky would start hurling. This went on for a little while and II think the rabbit was laughing his ass off at our pitiful effort. However, as it tuned out Mr. Phiffer was an excellent pitcher too. I seem to remember he had been in the Majors or something. But anyway, we asked him if he would take a few shots and what do you know, Mr. Phiffer nailed that laughing rabbit with the first stone!! and he hit the rabbit while he was running away. Now Ricky and Mr. Phiffer we our Supermen!! We prepared and cooked the rabbit and it was delicious and guess what? it tasted just like chicken! .
I remember sitting in the living room and laughing continuously listening and watching Ric and his dad sing funny songs, like their interpretation (rewording) of the song Lucy Don't Take Your Love to Town. They would tell jokes, some of them probably a bit risqué for our age as teenagers but we certainly understood them and they were funny as all get out.
