We joined Carlisle Elementary School about 1990. Mr Lakes was always at Carlisle early to set up the carpool lanes and stayed late to make sure the school was secured. The influence he had on my 3 children was that of a gentle father to guide them in the right direction. Mr. Lakes never put himself in front of anyone and always showed his gratitude. As a parent of 3 children who attended Carlisle Elementary, I can truly say that Robert was a friend to all. He was such a kind, gentle person who always had a ready smile and always willing to help out with whatever needed to be done. The children loved to be his helper. It was a real treat to get chosen by the teachers to go help Mr. Lakes with whatever little chore he might have for them. Years after my kids moved on from Carlisle, I'd pass the school and lightly tap my horn when I saw him outside. He'd always wave back. My sincere condolences to his family. Robert touched the lives of 1000's at Carlisle Elementary School. He was a man full of love, high integrity, great work ethic, and loved God. I will always treasure him as a friend and a brother in Christ.

I worked with Robert for many years at Carlisle Elementary. Never was there a harder worker, or anyone who loved children more than Robert. Whatever the job, Robert was there ready, willing, and able to get it done. If a student needed some of his expert advice, Robert was able to share with him, and the student loved and respected Robert for his help. If a staff member needed help as well, Robert was happy to oblige, no matter how tired he was after a long day of work. We had many discussions about life, and I learned much from him. One can't help but smile and be filled with complete joy at the thought of Mr. Lakes. I was a student at Carlisle elementary where he was the custodian, and everyone at the school knew and loved him. I have very fond memories of him walking around the halls, singing, humming a tune, and just sharing smiles and laughs with everyone. I can still hear that laugh in my mind. With the love and joy he spread everywhere he went, there is no doubt in my mind he is celebrating mightily with our Savior in heaven. Peace and comfort to his loved ones.
Mr. Lakes worked at my elementary school. When I was in first grade, my most prized possession was a Casio wristwatch. One day, while I was at school, it stopped working. I was devastated. I remember standing in the lunch line, crying, when all of a sudden I felt a heavy but gentle hand on my shoulder. It was Mr. Lakes. "What's those tears all about?" he said. "I replied: "My watch is broken." He asked me to take it off my wrist, then he disappeared. As I was leaving school later that day, he found me in the sea of kids and gave it back to me. It was a bad battery, and he fixed it for me. Few times in my life have I encountered such a kind and generous person. You will be missed, Mr. Lakes, and the world is a better place because of you.
