I had the wonderful privilege to work as Steve’s legal assistant while at Benton Oil in Carpinteria California. It comes with complete sadness to now learn of his passing just over a year ago. Steve was a class act. A gentleman. So proud of his family. I didn’t have the privilege of knowing him for years, but I did have the benefit of his discipline and knowledge of legal expertise an international finesse. It was a privilege to work for Steve and I won’t forget his kindness. My best to Susan and family.

We are extremely saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He and I worked together in Latin America, and Steve and Susan lived in the same apartment in Caracas. It was an exciting time then and we had many adventures together, both in business and pleasure. He was a true professional and I will miss his sage advice and funny dry wit. Rest in peace dear friend.

I was deeply saddened here in Australia to hear of Steve’s passing. We were tight friends during our years as prep school boarders, and remained in touch including corresponding quite recently. Steve nearly persuaded me to come to UT with him, but (perhaps fortunately) I was Berkeley bound. I recall with a smile blustery winter nights with Steve in Michigan, playing Herb Alpert records, drinking smuggled Carta Blanca, and listening to him pine for his beloved Susan far away in sunny Mexico City. I was relieved to hear he had finally landed her -- one can only speculate how insufferable he might have been otherwise. In recent years Steve and I mostly talked politics, and although we sometimes disagreed on particulars, Steve never balked at listening to a contrary narrative or considering new information -- he never needed to cancel anyone. Gifted with piercing intelligence, the driest of wit, and an infectious laugh, Steve will be sorely missed. He was a one off to be sure. My sincere condolences to Susan and the family. Steph Lady
