Colonel Olivier had a small farm house in north Dallas and I grew up across the street from his house. I would go help him with small projects like painting the lattice skirt around the house, or tilling up the garden and planting vegetable seeds (along with lots of wild flowers for Sue), or weeding out their blackberry bushes. He would pay me $10/hr, so for a 10-16 y/o child that felt like everything! But no matter what we were working on, when the job was done we would sit on the steps to their front door and drink a diet orange soda and just talk. Those conversations we had together helped shape me into the father and man I am today. Colonel Olivier was both a friend and mentor for me.
