Samuel A. Moreno's Obituary
Samuel A. Moreno, 88, passed away at his home in Irving, Texas on Friday, August 7, 2015. Samuel is survived by his loving wife Eugenia. Sam and Jeanie met as neighbors on Floyd Street in Dallas. These childhood sweethearts enjoyed 68 years of marriage. Sam was born on July 4, 1927 in Kansas City. The only son of Dolores and Maria Moreno. Maria Moreno had significant contributions to the Dallas community during her life as a teacher and champion for education of hispanic children in Dallas. In 1995 Maria Moreno Elementary School in Dallas was named in her honor. His parents fostered a love for education and service in Sam. He had an extensive background in business after graduating from SMU with a degree in Business Administration but was most passionate about his civic and social contributions. He served on many Boards including the National Hispanic Institute, Dallas Chamber of Commerce, National Hispanic Institute in Maxwell, Texas, State Fair of Texas Association, Dallas Summer Musicals, Foundation for Public Television, Circle 10 Council Boy Scouts Salvation Army, Republic National Bank of Dallas-East, Dallas County Mental Health/Retardation Board, El Centro Federal Saving and Loan Association, RHD Hospital, Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, and Agape Memorial UMC. Sam was also a Founder of the 6th Floor Museum in Dallas, Vice President for the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Board, served in the Naval and Air Force Reserves, President of the Greater Dallas Community of Churches, Member of the “Dirty Dozen”, Trustee at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Trustee of Methodist Hospitals of Dallas, Member of the Dallas Assembly, and Lay Leader of Agape Memorial UMC. Sam was involved in many business endeavors. He founded Petroleum Energy Equipment Corporation (PEEC) and worked for Gulf Oil in Venezuela and the City of Dallas as an Assistant City Manager. Sam loved his work and never retired from his final career as an interpreter for Federal and State Court systems. An avid tennis player, Sam was a longtime member at Brookhaven Country Club and played twice weekly until the very end. Other hobbies included singing and acting. He starred in the first telenovela produced in Dallas La Ley Del Silencio. He sang in his church choir at Agape Memorial UMC and was well known for his impromptu performances at social and family events. Sam is lovingly remembered by his wife Jeanie and sister Adelina Ochoa. His son David and wife Kathy Moreno; daughters Mary Moreno and Anna Lopez and husband Arnold Lopez, daughter-in- law Barbara Moreno-Spires. He also leaves grandchildren Elysia, Michael, Danielle, Nicole, Aaron and great-grandchildren Evan, Mark, Fabian, Owen, Logan and Arlo. Sam will be greatly missed by many close friends and extended family. Uncle Sam was loved and adored by numerous nieces and nephews. Sam is preceded in death by his son Fabian Moreno. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Restland Funeral Home. Services for Samuel will take place at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at The Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Agape Memorial UMC, 5111 Capitol Ave, Dallas, TX 75206.
