Granddad, I so wish I could be there as you are put to rest. I remember when I was a child we would arm wrestle at the kitchen table and you would always let me win. As I grew older and the physical distance between us (living in Washington) prevented regular visits I tried to remain close by regularly writing you letters. Granddad was the most incredible man. We would text regularly, even texting me just weeks before his death. I know Granddad's values echoed through my mom, by being raised with a joy for adventure, a thirst for knowledge, and tight family bonds. Men like Granddad are becoming mythical, for it is uncommon to meet someone today who embodies all the best human qualities as he did, with morality, loyalty, integrity, grace, humility, compassion, jest, and love. When in the presence of Granddad, you instinctively knew he was a caliber above the rest. Because of him I am a proud American, a proud Texan, and honored Granddaughter of a Navy veteran. (I accidentally posted this as a comment to Delora, but am re-posting so it will stand alone.)
