Thomas Hugh Owens' Obituary
OWENS, THOMAS HUGH age 79, of Tyler, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2011 surrounded by his family and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Restland Wildwood Chapel in Dallas. Family will receive friends and relatives on Friday evening, May 27, 2011 from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Restland Memorial Park. Memorial services in Tyler, Texas will be held at a later date. Tommy was born on December 24, 1931 in Austin, Texas, to the late Mary and Lex Owens. He is preceded in death by his daughter Holly Suzanne and his brother Dale. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Webb Owens; sons, Mitch Owens and wife Valerie Griffin of Austin, TX, Greg Owens and wife Marianne Lower of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeff Owens of Garland, TX; grandsons, Travis Owens, Zachary Owens, Blake Owens and Joe Amaya. Tommy served in the Navy as the Fire Control Officer on the U.S.S. Battleship Missouri. During his service he was awarded the China Service Metal, the Korean Service Metal (two tours) and the United Nations Metal. He later attended the University of Texas in Austin and worked in sales for many years with Motorola and other companies until he started his own business, Owens Oil Field Equipment, Inc. where he was President and CEO. Tommy was a devoted Christian and an ordained Deacon in the Baptist Church. He was a member of the Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. His last years of life were spent in quiet retirement in Tyler where he worked part-time at Walmart and volunteered at UT Health Science Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Thomas H. Owens may be made to Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701.
