Mrs Virginia Burroughs' Obituary
Virginia Burroughs Obituary
Virginia Randel Burroughs, age 93, joined her husband, Glen, and her parents James L. and Karin Randel in heaven on February 5, 2023. She was born August 19,1929, in Wichita Falls, TX, and graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1946. She attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX, earning a BA degree in 1950. It was there she met her husband of 59 years, Glen Burroughs, of Coleman County, TX. He preceded her in death in 2009.
Virginia was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (Gigi). She taught Conversational English (ESL) for almost 50 years in several Baptist churches as the family moved a number of times with Glen’s work. Teaching Bible became the love of her life as she taught Sunday School classes of all ages in a number of churches in Texas and Oklahoma. For 18 years she was involved in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), a non-denominational Bible study ministry, serving as Class Administrator, Discussion Leader, and finally Teaching Leader for the Garland Women’s Day Class from 1980 – 1990. Following this assignment from the Lord, she taught a ladies Bible study group, Morning Light, at First Baptist Church (FBC) Dallas for 15 years, and then in 2009 was a leader for the FBC Women’s Bible Study joining the teaching team in 2010. She also taught Sunday Bible classes for the Chinese Fellowship Department at FBC for many years. Recently, she taught a weekly Bible class at The Tradition Senior Living facility and then attended weekly after passing along teaching responsibilities.
Virginia served as a trustee for Hardin Simmons University for 9 years and in 1996 was awarded, along with Glen, an honorary doctorate degree. She also served on a Presidential Search Committee for the university.
Her greatest joy was Glen, her 3 children, their spouses, 9 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren plus two on the way. She was a role model and mentor not only for her family but for so many others and leaves a wonderful and long-lasting legacy. The Lord used her for His glory as she touched and impacted many lives.
She is survived by her daughter Kay Rhodes (Jim) of Lubbock, TX., her son Mark Burroughs (Nancy) of Dallas, and her son John Burroughs (Connie) of Chino Hills, CA.; grandchildren Lance (Jamie Leigh) Whyburn, Angela (Zane) Walker, Elizabeth Burroughs, Rachel (Kelby) Bice, Deborah Burroughs, Christa (Shawn) Svoboda, Brandon (Sallie) Burroughs, Megan (Mark) Lawrence, Ryan (Jenna) Burroughs; 15 great-grandchildren; sister Joann Markley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be February 17, Restland Funeral Home, 5:00 – 7:00pm. A family burial will be held the morning of February 18 with a Memorial Service following at 1:30 pm in the First Baptist Dallas Historic Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to FBC Dallas, Win Now Fund, 1707 San Jacinto, Dallas, TX 75201, or to the Glen and Virginia Burroughs Endowed Scholarship Fund at Hardin Simmons University, Box 16000, Abilene, TX 79698.
