Walter Max Burns' Obituary
On March 16th, 1933, Walter Max Burns was born on his grandparents farm just west of Leesville, Louisiana, and he passed away at C.C. Young Senior Center in Dallas, Texas, on February 19, 2021. As a young boy, he lived in the lumber community of Alco, Louisiana. When he was 9 years old his father (Troy) died and he moved to Leesville with his mother (Alma) and his brother (Howard). His life long love of music began when he was in the eighth grade and he began playing the baritone. He graduated from Leesville High School in 1950, received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in 1954, and a Master of Music Degree from Louisiana State University in 1958. From January 1955 until January 1957 he served in the
U. S. Army playing in The Third Army Band in Atlanta, Georgia. His 36 year career with the Dallas ISD began in1957 (band director at Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High for 2 years, band director at Hillcrest High School for 20 years, Instructional Specialist for the District for 14 years. He married Barbara Sue Stephenson in 1954 and they have twin daughters Carole Lyons (Kevin) and Cheryl Lawrence (David), and four grandsons Nathan and Matthew Lyons and Stephen and Christopher Lawrence. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
