Bill & his trusty blue van saved the day for my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary party in 2004. My brother Marshall & his wife Albina purchased multiple balloon bouquets for table decorations, not realizing there was no way to fit them all in their car along with their passengers, & there was not enough time to make two (or more) trips across Albuquerque from the north to the south. Bill was sleeping in his van at my parent's house & he graciously agreed to transport the balloons for us although it meant he barely had enough time to get ready. Bill visited my sister Vivian Rosso in Bailey CO a few times through the years. Pat & I drove up from Denver to hang out & enjoy lively chats with Bill by the bonfire. I'm happy to have one of his watercolors, a southern CO landscape at dusk, framed & hanging in my living room to remind me of him. He had such an eye for colors & passion for his subjects – such as the TX County courthouses! Bill always looked and perhaps acted much younger than his years. I was quite shocked to discover his age since I thought he wasn't much older than me! He was full of life & certainly led an interesting life himself! Much love & my sympathies to Bill's family. The Earlys were my across the street neighbors throughout my childhood, and Allen and Jeannette were among my parents' closest friends; I always felt welcome in their home. Although Bill was four years older than I, he was unfailingly kind and courteous to me. Despite the difference in our ages (and our heights), he would patiently play basketball with me in his driveway. After we were both grown, his son Ted and my eldest son Guy would have occasional play dates; Jeannette and my mother would alternate taking the boys to Six Flags. Bill had a warm heart and a generous spirit; and although I have had little occasion for contact with him in recent years, I cherish the memories I have from when we were both young. Guy I. Colby IV

Bill was a frequent visitor at our home in Bailey, CO. My kids grew fond of uncle Bill who would show up in the blue van and "color". My neighbors marveled how he could ride a bicycle in this mountain terrain! We enjoyed his company, his pictures, and his stories. Somewhere, I have some of his written stories. I was blessed by his friendship and generosity and will miss him dearly.

Bill was a kind and generous free spirit and a fantastic artist. We had some good memories, which we rehashed a couple of times the last few years. If there is a heaven, Bill is there.

Bill was an amazing artist. I still have a calendar, long out-dated, with his hand drawings of many of the courthouses in TX. We lived across the street from the Earlys, back in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Somewhere during that period, he wanted me to sit in his Olds when he was on vacation and start it up every day. I did so, and then it mysteriously didn't start anymore. I never knew why, and to my knowledge, neither did he. Maybe Oldsmobiles are not supposed to be idle? I will long remember him and Franz in long conversations with our dad on the back porch, some summer nights. It was soon after Franz had finished college. Lazy summer days and nights. Fond memories. Dear Ted and Family, Bill would probably be glad to know he was somewhat unforgettable! Bill was with us at Caruth for many years and had his routines that we had to adapt to. I was always grateful when he would make it back safely from his bicyle rides (large tricycle!) He would cross the busy central exp intersection and loved riding up to Tom Thumb center. He also loved to sit and bake in the sun on the hottest days and usually refused water because that wasn't his routine. Bill was always an avid reader and particularly loved his mysteries. I sent him a new Miochael Connely mystery that had just come out when he was in the hospital and I think he was slightly pleased. Never a man of many words, Bill would keep to his plan no matter his physical issues. No amount of solicitous advise would ever deter him, so we just went with it. His friend Jack from Preston Hollow Presbyterian was a dear friend of his Mother and continued his faithful visits to Bill throughout his stay with us. Many thanks to Jack for his support to Bill as Bill seemed to genuinely appreciate Jack's efforts on his behalf. I hope that you will know the family and friends are in my thoughts on seeing of his passing. Bill was a bit of a legend with us for those many years. I rememberd more stories as I reflected.
