Dear Alan and Family, I was sad to receive the news about the loss of "Captain Willie Short". Captain Short was the pistol range master at the Dallas Sheriff's Department when I went through their reserve police Academy in 1990. He knew everything about weapons…how to operate them, repair them, and most importantly "how to teach police to use them safely". I am grateful that I had such an outstanding instructor that laid the ground work for my profession. I remember many times, "Bernie" would telephone him at the end of the day and guide him away from his long days of teaching. Captain spent many hours teaching officers, but he knew when it was time to go home to his family. Later, I learned that "Captain Short" built my son's grandparents home on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas, years earlier. A lot of loving memories were spent in that home by our family which was built by him. He built a home that was solid as a rock. What an awesome job he did. Captain Short was a mentor, a fatherly figure, and a dear friend to me. I will miss visiting with him at the "Highland Park Cafeteria" and hearing his laugh as he told wonderful stories of life. What a wonderful person he and Bernie were together. Now, they can dance together with joy in the "High Heavens" with our "Heavenly Father". May God Bless his family, and his wonderful memories will always be in our hearts. A photo was attached from a retirement party with some of his students. Sincerely, DPD Jenny Nance
