Woody Don Blacketer's Obituary
On March 16, 1933, Woody Don Blacketer was born in Wylie, TX to Robert Earl and Mary Mildred Blacketer. Woody was the last surviving sibling to Laverne, Thomas, Rita, Lita, Earlene, Robert and Ronnie. Woody grew up in Nevada, TX where he went to grade school. Then moved to Dallas where he attended Sunset High School. In 1951, he was the outstanding receiver for the Sunset Bisons Football team and went to state in track. You could often catch him skipping school but showing up for football practice. In 1952, he was voted Most Athletic. After high school, Woody served in the United States Air Force based at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio. He was stationed in Germany where he played football for the military, then returned to Carswell Airforce Base in Fort Worth when his father became ill. He finished his service in Altus, OK. In 1955, Woody married Annette Clenndinning and they started their life together in Dallas. In 1957, they gave birth to their first son, Terry Don Blacketer. Then, in 1959, they were blessed with a second son, Woody Dwayne Blacketer. In 1962, Woody worked for Gifford-Hill American in Grand Prairie, TX. Then in 1965 he started his own backhoe business and moved his family to Nevada, TX returning to the country and his roots. They purchased 128 acres where they raised cotton and wheat, and at one time had 30 head of Angus. He helped his boys raise Angus calves for their school FFA and enjoyed going to the stockshows with the boys. The Blacketer family continued to grow over the next two decades as Terry married Susan and they had two daughters Candy and Christy; Dwayne married Debbie and they had three sons Brandon, Casey and Nathan. Woody was a lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was a farmer, a hunter, a fisherman, a husband, a dad and a papa. He served as a Deacon at Nevada Baptist Church. He played on the First Baptist Church in Richardson softball team 1963 -1967 taking the team to victory pitching six straight games. Woody enjoyed a long life of 83 years and was taken on April 27, 2016. He is joined in heaven by his father, mother and siblings. Woody is survived by his two sons, two daughters-in-law, 5 grandchildren, 4 great grand-children and many additional extended family and friends. Services for Woody will take place at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Restland Funeral Home in the Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm, Friday evening, April 29, 2016 at Restland Funeral Home in staterooms C-D. Immediately following the service on Saturday, there will be a short procession to Restland Memorial Park where there will be a brief committal service with Air Force honors and Woody’s body will be laid to rest in the Garden of the Last Supper. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home located at 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
